The shutdown of the federal government, planned and engineered by anti-government extremists in Congress and their billionaire backers, continues. And the Supreme Court started a term in which conservatives on the Court could further gut campaign finance laws, restrict women’s access to abortion, undermine fair housing and educational opportunity, and weaken separation of church and state.

In other words, it’s the perfect week for the Values Voter Summit, the annual event at which thousands of Religious Right activists have a chance to rub shoulders with the movement’s leaders and the Republican politicians who court them. The summit’s lead sponsor, the Family Research Council, has asked its supporters to pray, “May God cause this years [sic] VVS to have a profound impact in informing Christian and conservative leaders, and in shaping the 2014 elections for righteousness!”

People For the American Way has joined the Southern Poverty Law Center, Faithful America, GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the NAACP and the National Council of La Raza in urging public officials not to participate in the festival of extremism, but experience indicates that the chance to preen before these super-motivated right-wing activists is impossible for many Republican politicos to pass up.

The schedule gives you a pretty good sense of what the Values Voter Summit will be like: the first four speakers are senators from the Tea Party wing of the GOP: Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz. Of course, that’s after the pre-event breakfast, “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition,” a panel on gun rights. (No, you are not reading The Onion.) Current and former Republican House members scheduled to speak on Friday are all Tea Partiers: Allen West, Jim Bridenstine (Okla.), Louie Gohmert (Texas), Jim Jordan (Ohio), and Steve Scalise (La.)

The Values Voter Summit makes clear how completely the Religious Right’s leaders are working to merge their activists’ anti-abortion and anti-gay zeal with the anti-government extremism of the Tea Party. Actually, it goes beyond that. Movement leaders are trying to give the Tea Party’s agenda a biblical foundation. A couple of weeks ago, for example, Family Research Council spokesman Ken Blackwell said that there is “nothing more Christian” than throwing millions of low-income families off food stamps. The Tea Party – Religious Right convergence is also evident on a panel called “Where do we go from here: Challenging Tyranny,” whose speakers include FRC’s Ken Blackwell and Dean Clancy of the Koch-funded FreedomWorks.

The Family Research Council has been leading cheers for Ted Cruz, the shutdown Svengali. Cruz appeared on Perkins’ radio show last week for a fawning interview in which Cruz blamed President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for the shutdown and accused Democratic leaders of holding veterans hostage. For his part, Perkins called Obamacare a “government takeover of health care” and a “lurch toward socialism” and said there is nothing more important than stopping it. Perkins even portrayed the government shutdown as a reason to attend VVS, because there won’t be as much traffic on the streets.

Perkins recently sent out a fundraising letter in which he called on Congress to use both the government funding bill and the looming debt limit deadline to force through limits on the Obama administration’s requirement that insurance plans cover contraception. He is also promoting the dangerous idea being floated by Tea Party Republicans that failure to increase the debt ceiling is no big problem.

Of course, if you’re an old-school Religious Right activist who is really motivated by hostility to legal equality for LGBT people, the Values Voter Summit will have plenty of anti-gayness for you. A panel on marriage features Brian Brown, who traveled to Russia earlier this year to rally support for a law that bans the adoption of Russian children by parents who live in countries that recognize legal equality for LGBT people. Several speakers will present marriage equality as a dire threat to religious liberty. Dr. Ben Carson, who became a Tea Party folk hero for lecturing President Obama about a flat tax during a prayer breakfast last year, said last week that supporters of LGBT equality want to “get rid of” everything in the Bible.

In fact, multiple panels on Saturday are built around the notion that religious liberty is in extreme peril in the U.S., with speakers from the Heritage Foundation, the Becket Fund, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, among others.

A concentrated dose of right-wing extremism may come on Friday night, where the line-up includes far-right Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, whose bid to revive the state’s unconstitutional sodomy law was just rejected by the Supreme Court; his even fringier running mate E.W. Jackson; former presidential candidate and radio host Mike Huckabee; and former Sen. Jim DeMint, the Tea Party godfather who left the Senate to take charge of the Heritage Foundation, whose massive budget he is using to bully Republicans into submission to the wishes of the Tea Party.

But even that line-up may be topped by “Standing Up to the Assaults on our Faith,” a panel that includes birther extraordinaire Joseph Farah; conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, who insists that Obama is gay; dominionist anti-choice activist and radio host Janet Porter, author of The Criminalization of Christianity; and self-described “Christocrat” Rick Scarborough, who says AIDS is God’s punishment. And one of the event’s major sponsors is the American Family Association, whose extreme right-wing views are expressed on a daily basis by its spokesman Bryan Fischer.

On Friday, People For the American Way joined with the Southern Poverty Law Center, Faithful America, GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the NAACP and the National Council of La Raza to send a letter to every public official scheduled to speak at this year’s Values Voter Summit, urging them to withdraw from the event.

Among the scheduled speakers are Sens. Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Tim Scott and Reps. Paul Ryan, Randy Forbes, Michele Bachmann, Jim Bridenstine, Louie Gohmert, Jim Jordan, Steve King, Steve Scalise and Scott Turner.

The letter [pdf] reads in part:

We understand that you’ve been invited to speak at the upcoming Values Voter Summit being held in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 11-13. Given the demonizing lies about the LGBT community spread by the host, the Family Research Council (FRC), and another major sponsor of the event, the American Family Association (AFA), we urge you to not lend the prestige of your office to the summit.

The FRC has amassed an extensive record of vilifying gays and lesbians with falsehoods – portraying them as sick, evil, incestuous, violent, perverted, and a danger to the nation. Perhaps its most insidious claim is that gay men molest children at a far higher rate than heterosexual men – a claim refuted by all credible scientific authorities, including the American Psychological Association. Yet the FRC has continued to smear gays and lesbians by claiming that pedophilia, in the words of FRC President Tony Perkins, “is a homosexual problem.”

Perkins also says the “It Gets Better” campaign, an initiative designed to give LGBT students hope for a better tomorrow, is “disgusting” and part of a “concerted effort” to “recruit” children into the gay “lifestyle.” One senior FRC official has even argued that homosexuality should be illegal.

The AFA’s Bryan Fischer, who serves as the group’s spokesman and director of issue analysis, frequently blames homosexuality for the Holocaust and Nazi Party: “Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and 6 million dead Jews.” He also promotes the views of the American architect of the “Kill the Gays” bill in Uganda.

Demonizing the LGBT community has consequences. As FBI data demonstrate, it is one of the groups most likely to be victimized by violent hate crimes. Defaming them publicly day after day – as the FRC and the AFA do – only throws fuel on the fire.

The bigotry of the FRC and the AFA is not limited to gays and lesbians. Fischer, for example, has said that African Americans “rut like rabbits” and argued that women should be kicked out of politics and the military. He’s also stated that Hispanics are “socialists by nature” and come here to “plunder” our country. The FRC’s executive vice president, Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, has said Jews must be converted to Christianity and has argued that “Islam is not a religion and does not deserve First Amendment protections” – a statement that is antithetical to American ideals.

In 2011, we urged Mitt Romney not to share a stage with the extremists, and particularly Fischer, at that year’s Values Voter Summit. Although Romney still attended, he also made a point of calling out Fischer’s “poisonous language." This year, Fischer was noticeably not listed as a speaker at the summit, although his employer remains a sponsor.

Miranda Blue American Family Association Bryan Fischer C4 Equality For All Jerry Boykin Jim Bridenstine Jim Jordan Louie Gohmert Marco Rubio Michele Bachmann Paul Ryan Rand Paul Randy Forbes Scott Turner Steve King Steve Scalise Ted Cruz Tim Scott Tony Perkins Values Voter Summit Family Research Council 44472 Mon, 07 Oct 2013 16:58:31 -0400 Paul Ryan Right Wing Leftovers - 1/4/13 http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/right-wing-leftovers-1413

Paul Ryan will be the keynote speaker at the anti-choice Susan B. Focus on the Family and its founder James Dobson have a long history of promoting anti-gay policies and ex-gay therapy, and earned a shout-out from Romney earlier this week while campaigning in Colorado, where it is headquartered.

While Romney has moved in his career from backing gay rights to becoming a vocal foe, Ryan has a solidly anti-gay voting record in Congress. Ryan told Daly, whose political arm has been spending money on behalf of Romney and a number of other Republican candidates like Todd Akin, that the ticket is firmly against same-sex marriage and that he was a “big supporter” of a 2006 amendment which enshrined marriage discrimination into the Wisconsin state constitution. He also said the Obama administration’s decision not to defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act hurt the “rule of law” and “contradicts our system of government,” however, a number of presidents including George W. Bush have not defended statutes they deemed unconstitutional.

Daly: Focus on the Family has been behind the scenes working for years to defend marriage and to speak out for marriage and the importance of marriage. I think thirty-two out of thirty-two states where we have helped put a ballot initiative or some other mechanism in front of the people, we have won that thirty-two out of thirty-two times. It seems like when it’s in front of the people they vote for it, if it’s the state-level judges they will try to do it by fiat or if it is simply some other mechanism, the State House passes it without the vote of the people. For the Romney-Ryan ticket, when you look at marriage, what do we need to do in the culture to lift up and strengthen the very core building block of society and that’s family.

Ryan: It’s the foundation for society and for family for thousands of years. First of all, Mitt Romney and I — I’ll just say it, it’s worth repeating — we believe marriage is between one man and one woman, that’s number one. Number two, you know where I come from we had one of those amendments in Wisconsin, I was a big supporter of it and we passed it like you say, where it’s put on the ballot it passes. The second point is, President Obama gave up defending the Defense of Marriage Act in the courts, I mean, not only is this decision to abandon this law the wrong decision, it passed in a bipartisan manner, it is very troubling because it undermines not only traditional marriage but it contradicts our system of government. It’s not the president’s job to pick and choose which laws he likes. A Romney administration will protect traditional marriage and the rule of law and we will provide the Defense of Marriage Act the proper defense in the courts that it deserves.
Brian Tashman Anti-Gay C4 Election 2012 Jim Daly Marriage Equality Paul Ryan Focus on the Family Fighting the Right 41164 Wed, 03 Oct 2012 13:15:31 -0400 Paul Ryan Right Wing Round-Up - 10/1/12 http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/right-wing-round-10112

Tim Murphy @ Mother Jones: Why This Man Won't Be the Next Nader.

David Tanitor @ TPM: Meet Dean Chambers, The Virginia Republican Who Is ‘Unskewing’ The Polls.

Steve Benen @ The Maddow Blog: Paul Ryan's too busy for details.

Zeke Miller @ BuzzFeed: Nancy Pelosi Leads Zombie Army In Republican Video.

Dick Gordon @ Salon: Son of a bigot.

Zack Ford @ Think Progress: NOM Defends Child Kidnapping Because Of A Parent’s ‘Biological Connection’.

Jeremy Hooper: Harry Jackson cursed 'Washington Blade' out of business; the 'Blade' that's still in print, that is.

Kyle Mantyla Harry Jackson National Organization for Marriage Paul Ryan Round-Up 41143 Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:39:46 -0400 Paul Ryan Right Wing Round-Up - 9/26/12 http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/right-wing-round-92612

Michael B. She accused Obama of appeasing the Muslim Brotherhood and opening our borders to terrorists. Not long after, Paul Ryan also attacked Obama over foreign policy:

Amid all these threats and dangers, what we do not see is steady, consistent American leadership. Only by the confident exercise of American influence are evil and violence overcome.

But here’s the thing. Ryan and Bachmann are speaking at a Religious Right conference that is making a mockery of diplomacy and even the threat of terrorism. Consider the following:

the conference features a fake terrorist who claims to have smuggled weapons into the U.S. and carried out “bloody terror” missions against Israel

the video that sparked the unrest in Egypt and Libya was created and promoted by anti-Muslim activists who have worked with backers of Bachmann’s effort to purge the U.S. government of Muslim Americans and key players in the effort to block the so-called Ground Zero mosque (e.g. ACT! for America and the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission)

in July, misinformation promoted by Bachmann and two upcoming speakers at the Values Voter Summit, Frank Gaffney and Jerry Boykin, sparked aggressive protests against American diplomats in Egypt, including Secretary Clinton, whose motorcade was pelted by protestors – Boykin and Gaffney have been the leading forces behind Bachmann’s witch hunt against Muslim Americans in the U.S. government

former Lt. Perkins leads the group’s efforts against gay rights, abortion rights and church/state separation.

The FRC has one of the most anti-gay platforms of any major political organization, including expressions of support for the criminalization of homosexuality in the U.S. and abroad in countries law Malawi and Uganda. The unconscionable shooting, however, should not be used as a way to conceal his organization’s virulent language targeting gays and lesbians.

Mat Staver

Mat Staver is the head of the Liberty University School of Law and its legal affiliate, Liberty Counsel, both sponsors of the Values Voter Summit. Liberty Counsel (LC) has been implicated in the Lisa Miller kidnapping case, where an LC client kidnapped her daughter and fled to Central America after a court granted custody to her former partner.

Through his role at Liberty Counsel and on his radio program Faith & Freedom, Staver has:

argued that President Obama “does not respect America” and wants to intentionally cripple America so he can have global power;

suggested that the president was using health care reform to create his own personal army of Brownshirts;

pledged to resist the “abusive and lawless regime in the Executive Branch and in the United States Congress”;

defended Malawi’s law criminalizing homosexuality and said U.S. opposition to criminalization was “immoral”;

urged schools to prohibit students from holding a “Day of Silence” to protest anti-gay bullying;

alleged that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act will lead to child molestation, sexual assault, and even death if passed;

promoted “ex-gay” reparative therapy and warned that gays and lesbians are “ intent on trampling upon the fundamental freedoms”;

warned that the Obama administration might have its own “ affirmative action program” for Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers;

linked gay rights to the country’s economic problems;

At last year’s Values Voter Summit, Staver claimed that progressives are using LGBT rights and secular government in order to “ultimately implode America” and that the “ agenda of the homosexual movement” is to destroy freedom and western civilization.

Jerry Boykin

Family Research Council vice president and retired Army Lt. He has since built a career as a Religious Right speaker, specializing in anti-Muslim rhetoric and anti-Obama conspiracy theories. Wildmon believes gay rights, secular government and the theory of evolution have put America “on the road to self-destruction” and accused gay rights supporters of acting “in the most vile, wicked, evil ways.” He claims Obama is not a Christian but an ”evil” and tyrannical leader who is out “to destroy religious freedom in this country” as part of his “administration’s all-out war on Christians.” Wildmon has also attacked Obama as “un-American” and said his administration’s policies to combat climate change are “anti-American [and] anti-Christian.”

Sandy Rios

Former Concerned Women for America president Sandy Rios now hosts a show on the American Family Association’s radio network where she regularly floats anti-gay, anti-Muslim and anti-Obama conspiracies. She believes that there are “tons of people in government,” including Obama, who “embrace Socialism/Communism.” Obama, says Rios, is trying to bring about America’s “destruction” and compared his campaign to Hamas. According to Rios, liberal and secular Jews specifically are among “the worst enemies of the country,” lamenting that most Jews identify with the left and warning that “Jewish leftists in this country are eager to embrace Islam .” Rios also criticizes Muslim-Americans, saying they plan to “overpopulate and overtake” America and joining Michele Bachmann in promoting conspiracies about Muslim Brotherhood infiltration. Like other anti-gay activists on the far-right, Rios has dubbed child molestation as “ homosexual recruitment” and knocked Ellen DeGeneres for pushing “moral chaos.”

Star Parker

Parker is a long-time Religious Right activist who is particularly active in anti-gay and anti-abortion rights work. As Washington, DC was poised to legalize marriage equality, Parker warned that it would lead to more HIV infections in the city, which would “transform officially into Sodom.” In a recent radio interview with Tony Perkins, Parker mused that black family life was “more healthy” under slavery than it is today and has accused liberals of treating Justice Clarence Thomas and Gov. Sarah Palin like runaway slaves. She has called legal abortion a “genocide” on par with slavery and the Holocaust and blamed “sexual promiscuity” for nearly all budgetary and societal problems. At last year’s Values Voter Summit, she claimed that God is getting ready to punish America for marriage equality and legal abortion.

Lila Rose

Rose is the anti-choice activist responsible for carrying out a deceptive hit job against Planned Parenthood this year. Members of Rose’s group, Live Action, went to Planned Parenthood clinics around the country posing as clients seeking help with a child sex trafficking ring. Planned Parenthood alerted the FBI about the activity, and the one staffer who handled the supposed traffickers inappropriately was promptly fired. Nevertheless, Rose claimed that her hoax proved “beyond a shadow of a doubt that Planned Parenthood intentionally breaks state and federal laws and covers up the abuse of young girls it claims to serve.”

She says she has a plan to “take out Planned Parenthood,” which is part of her battle with the “lie of Satan.” Rose is no newcomer to the Values Voter Summit: in a speech at 2009’s summit, she called for abortions to be performed “in the public square.”

Kirk Cameron

Child actor Kirk Cameron has pushed hismisleading, Religious Right documentary about America’s founding to become a hero among conservative activists. href="http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/ann-romney-joins-cardinal-dolan-declining-values-voter-summit-invitation">Ann Romney Joins Cardinal Dolan In Declining Values Voter Summit Invitation]

Ann Romney, the person tasked with humanizing her husband Mitt, is apparently scheduled to address a conference that dehumanizes others. I’m talking about the Values Voter Summit, which is hosted and sponsored by two Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate groups – the Family Research Council and American Family Association.

The National Journal Daybook and Values Voter Summit website both list Ann Romney on the schedule:

Notably absent from the list is Cardinal Timothy Dolan, whose spokesperson pointedly declined FRC’s invitation. Yet there Ann Romney is.

It’s an odd move by the Romney campaign. They’ve previously deployed her to show the softer side of Mitt. Now they’re sending her to stand on stage with a man who paid $83,000 to use David Duke’s mailing list and addressed a white supremacist group while in public office. The same person – Tony Perkins – also praised a law in Uganda to execute gays and warned senators they would have “the blood of innocent soldiers on their hands” if they repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

The Romney campaign must have its reasons, but it sure seems like an odd way to deploy Ann Romney. They already have Paul Ryan scheduled to address the conference. Do they really need two headliners reaching out to the Bachmann-Akin wing of the party? Besides, just last week Ann Romney refused to answer questions about same-sex marriage and contraception, dismissing them as distractions "from what the real voting issue is going to be."

For weeks, the Values Voter Summit website listed Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as invited speakers. When Ryan was added to the ticket in August, the Family Research Council blasted out an email confirming Ryan’s appearance. No one really expected Mitt Romney to show for the event – too radical, too close to the election. That’s why, when the conference schedule was recently posted, it was a shock to see not only “Romney” on the lineup, but Ann Romney.

Ryan and Ann Romney, if she appears, will be speaking on stage with Perkins in a lineup that includes Kirk Cameron and Michele Bachmann. They’ll be kicking off a conference that features a who’s who of Todd Akin backers (e.g. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Steve King) and anti-Muslim McCarthyites (e.g. Frank Gaffney and Jerry Boykin). And, of course, there will be gay-bashers – featured speakers like Perkins and Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver, who recently defended Malawi’s law criminalizing homosexuality. They would push for the same thing here in America if they thought they could pull it off. In fact, FRC’s Peter Sprigg and the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer have already done so.

These aren’t conservative people pushing conservative values and policies – this is the radical right. America, and the Romney campaign in all likelihood, would be better served if Romney and Ryan followed Dolan’s example and skipped the conference. Or they can go cast their lot with the extremists with the national media looking on. We’ll see what their priorities are this Friday morning.

Josh Glasstetter American Family Association Ann Romney C4 Liberty Counsel Mat Staver Paul Ryan Tony Perkins Values Voter Summit Values Voter Summit Family Research Council Fighting the Right 40977 Tue, 11 Sep 2012 17:20:41 -0400 Paul Ryan Huckabee Blocked Abortion Funding for 15-Year-Old Girl Raped by Stepfather http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/huckabee-blocked-abortion-funding-15-year-old-girl-raped-stepfather
Mike Huckabee and Paul Ryan have both supported “personhood” amendments, which would ban abortion in the case of rape or incest, among other things. But unlike Ryan, Huckabee has already had the opportunity to force others to live in accordance with his extreme beliefs. Ryan, who speaks shortly after Huckabee tonight at the RNC, is still waiting for his chance.

Huckabee makes no secret of his views on reproductive rights. He has denounced the “holocaust of liberalized abortion,” angering the Anti-Defamation League in the process, and he argued at a personhood fundraiser that pro-choice activists are really motivated by “profit from the sale of death.” He was raising cash, by the way, for an amendment that would have criminalized not only abortion but also in vitro fertilization, stem cell research, the treatment of ectopic pregnancies and some types of birth control.

Here’s what Huckabee did when he was in power. In August of 1996, not even a month into his governorship, he went to the mat to deny funding – $430 to be precise – for an abortion provided to a “15-year-old mentally retarded girl impregnated by her stepfather”:

In defiance of an order from a federal judge, Gov. Mike Huckabee on Friday refused to allow Medicaid to pay for the abortion of a 15-year-old girl whose stepfather has been charged with incest.

While federal law requires Medicaid to fund abortions for poor women in cases of rape or incest, Huckabee said through a spokesman his first obligation is to the Arkansas Constitution, which forbids public funds to be used for abortion except when the mother's life is in danger.

While Huckabee claimed his first obligation was to the Arkansas Constitution, he was either willfully ignoring, or unfamiliar with, the basics of federalism. Either way, his first obligation clearly was not to the U.S. Constitution or the 15-year-old girl, who thankfully underwent the procedure in advance of the standoff. Nor was it to the people of his state. As the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported, the standoff “appeared to put the entire state Medicaid program in jeopardy.”

Huckabee stuck to his guns as long as he could. As the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported, “U.S. Dist. Judge William Wilson entered into the record Thursday a ruling that Arkansas must pay for Medicaid abortions in cases of rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother, making the ruling official” and clearing the way for contempt charges for Huckabee. That never happened, as Huckabee agreed under pressure to the creation of a private trust to pay for such abortions.

The debate over reproductive choice can seem at times to be more theoretical than practical, but Huckabee's actions give us an idea of how a Religious Right America would look. So a 15-year-old mentally retarded girl was raped by her stepfather and got pregnant? Aw shucks, no abortion for her!

Josh Glasstetter Abortion Arkansas C4 Mike Huckabee Paul Ryan personhood Fighting the Right 40881 Wed, 29 Aug 2012 20:14:30 -0400 Paul Ryan Paul Ryan Still Believes in Forcing Rape Victims to Give Birth to Their Rapists' Children http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/paul-ryan-still-believes-forcing-rape-victims-give-birth-their-rapists-children
In an interview yesterday with Pittsburgh’s KDKA, Paul Ryan took the opportunity to stand behind his record of trying to force rape victims who get pregnant to give birth to their rapists’ children. So that would be potentially very good news for those of us that care about seeing a biblical view of the environment in public policy.

Beisner: Yes it would. Ryan’s understanding I think fits well with the biblical understanding that God made man in His image to be creative and productive as He is, to fill and to rule the earth. Not to abuse the earth, not to rape the land so to speak as many environmentalists talk, but rather to increase its fruitfulness, its beauty and its safety to the glory of God and the benefit of our neighbors. I think that really underlies the comments that Ryan has made on these issues through the years and it comes I think from his solidly Christian worldview background.

…

Beisner: Most Americans do not see any real purpose in tight restrictions on CO2 admissions. Many Americans actually remembered what they learned way back in seventh and eighth grade biology class, mainly that carbon dioxide is plant food. So the more of that there is in the air the more the crops grow and the cheaper the food is around the world, this actually helps especially the poor.
Brian Tashman American Family Association Bryan Fischer C4 Calvin Beisner Environment green dragon Paul Ryan Cornwall Alliance Fighting the Right 40729 Mon, 13 Aug 2012 16:50:11 -0400 Paul Ryan Paul Ryan Featured Alongside 'Former Terrorist’ http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/paul-ryan-featured-alongside-former-terrorist
This, in a nutshell, is your modern Religious Right:

The website for the upcoming Values Voter Summit in DC, hosted by the Family Research Council, features Mitt Romney’s running mate side-by-side with “former terrorist” Kamal Saleem, seen here:

I can’t imagine Ryan would appreciate being given equal billing with a “former terrorist,” but Saleem is a big deal to the Religious Right.

Saleem, whose real name is Khodor Shami, claims that he was Muslim Brotherhood operative who “came to the United States of America…to destroy this country,” saying that he crossed the Canadian border and “brought weapon caches right through cities.” Somewhere along the way he converted, got a job at Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network, and became the favorite ex-Muslim of the Religious Right. As a result, he says his life is constantly in danger, and he is being pursued by foreign agents.

If you’re asking yourself why Saleem isn’t in jail as opposed to speaking at a conference with the likes of Paul Ryan, Michele Bachmann, Jerry Boykin, and Tony Perkins, it’s because Saleem is widely considered to be a fraud. But this begs a question.

Does FRC believe Saleem? Do they think he came to America as a Muslim Brotherhood member bent on destroying our nation? Paul Ryan is a rare and exceptional public servant who combines the courage of his convictions with a sharp intellect and a winsome personality. Paul Ryan's voting record also suggests that he believes that social, fiscal and national security conservatism is indivisible. Paul Ryan's philosophy clearly includes the understanding that America's financial greatness is tied directly to its moral and cultural wholeness.

As a member of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, he has been a defender of religious expression in the public square. Paul Ryan has spoken out strongly against President Obama's abortion drug and contraception mandates as an affront to religious liberty. It shows the kind of talented and experienced team Governor Romney will put together that will work for American exceptionalism.

Ryan is a strong conservative. He is pro-life and believes in traditional marriage. Of course, what he is most known for is entitlement reform and stopping the growth of government. He's 42 with a young family.

So this will be a youthful, forward-looking ticket, reminding us that with the right choices America's best days are still ahead of us.
